15 Feb The 2024 Coastal Ascent Trail Run
The Coastal Ascent Trail Run is a trail running event held annually in Newcastle NSW. The 2024 edition of the event will be the third running of this stunning and challenging trail running event which will become a part of the Golden Trail Series for the first time in history!
For those seeking a professionally run event which takes you in and through National Parks with a distance for every runner, then The Coastal Ascent is for you.
A course that will literally take your breath away! The 11km, 25km and 50km Ultra Coastal Ascent courses start and finish in the Dixon Park precinct adjacent to one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches. This provides runners and supporters not only an epic finishing experience as you run down Merewether beach on the final push home, but access to all the amenities that will complete your race day experience. Our event expo will be a vibe with brands like SALOMON handing out branded cow bells, offering shoe demos and gear advice, LeBent offering you to wear test their incredible socks, FIXX nutrition displaying their huge range of the best sports nutrition on the market and our friend at NORT zero alcohol beer handing out ice cold cans. There will also be a recovery zone, VIP finishers shoot to hang with fellow athletes, local food and drink and so much more.
The 11km, 25 km and 50 km courses will challenge all runners. The fastest possible route from Dixon Park, through Merewether and into the Coastal Rainforest of Glenrock Reserve will elevate your heart rate on the outward journey and reward you with amazing views on the return journey. Within the National Park take on sections of technical single track, fast flowing fire trail, grasslands, beach sections with plenty of challenging hills and a course giving many stunning coastal views. The turnaround for the 25km and 50km races takes you in and out of the ‘NORT Zone’ at Reay Park which is a sports oval all runners will enter, run a lap of and then exit. The NORT Zone is a great place for Australian run clubs to bring the party vibe to The Coastal Ascent, witness and cheer on athletes giving their all on race day and for athletes to grab valuable fuel, advice and a huge lift from their team, family, friends and the public. We’ll have coffee trucks, food and beverage and of course NORT zero alcohol beers flowing all day long as we welcome runners into the NORT Zone during their race.
The 5km course starts a short walk from Dixon Park and takes you straight into the National Park for a challenging and rewarding shorter race option. The 1.6km Kids course will run within the immediate vicinity of Dixon Park. We’re really looking forward to seeing the future speedsters giving it their all!
Stunning coastal views with plenty of elevation gain is the Coastal Ascent! Add to that, on course activations provided at the two spectator zones to cheer on all runners from the elite to everyday trail runners there are reasons to get it done for everyone.
The Coastal Ascent course has been designed in close consultation with National Parks and elite trail runner and local Newcastle resident Vlad Shatrov, who has been able to develop this stunning course which covers multiple terrain but also ensures runners are safely supported and motivated throughout their chosen distance.
By partnering with naming rights sponsor SALOMON in 2024 and including the Coastal Ascent Trail run into the National Golden Trail series, all runners will benefit from an increased on course and start/finish line activations, media presence and inclusion of elite trail runners from all over Australia. In addition to adding the 50km course this year and including it on the June long weekend, the expectation is that many runners will ‘step up’ and take on Australia’s newest ULTRA with many deciding to travel from interstate to stay in Newcastle for the weekend.
Oh and to say thanks for making the trip after you’re done making the most of the event expo head home for a shower and we’ll see you at MODUS Brewery 600 meters from the start/ finish line for the after party.
